چکیده

Deuterium is the best indicator of the baryon density; however, only its present abundance is known (and only locally) and its chemical evolution is intertwined with that of He. Because galactic abundances are spatially heterogeneous, mean chemical-evolution models are not well suited for extrapolating the pre-solar D and He abundances to their primeval values. We introduce a new approach which explicitly addresses heterogeneity, and show that the decade-old big-bang nucleosynthesis concordance interval η ≈ (2− 8)× 10 based on D and He is robust. submitted to Astrophysical Journal Letters

Implications of a new temperature scale for halo dwarfs on LiBeB and chemical evolution

Big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) and the cosmic baryon density from cosmic microwave background anisotropies together predict a primordial Li abundance a factor of 2–3 higher than that observed in galactic halo dwarf stars. A recent analysis of Li observations in halo stars, using significantly higher surface temperature for these stars, found a higher Li plateau abundance. These results go a lon...

Model-independent Predictions of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

We derive constraints from standard (with Nν = 3) BBN arising solely from two cosmologically produced nuclides, He and Li, from which the extrapolation to primordial abundances is straightforward. The abundances of D and He are at present only inferred from their solar and local interstellar medium values using models of galactic chemical evolution. However, our knowledge of chemical evolution ...

Lithium Isotopic Abundances in Metal-poor Halo Stars

Very high-quality spectra of 24 metal-poor halo dwarfs and subgiants have been acquired with ESO’s VLT/UVES for the purpose of determining Li isotopic abundances. The derived 1D, nonLTE Li abundances from the Li i 670.8 nm line reveal a pronounced dependence on metallicity but with negligible scatter around this trend. Very good agreement is found between the abundances from the Li i 670.8 nm l...

Giant Branch Mixing and the Ultimate Fate of Primordial Deuterium in the Galaxy

The observed cosmic abundances of light elements are most consistent with each other, and with the predictions of big bang nucleosynthesis, if, contrary to the usual assumption, galactic chemical evolution reduces (D + He)/H with time. Chemical evolution models which do this require that low mass stars destroy He in the envelope gas that they return to the interstellar medium. A simple argument...

LiBeB and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

The dual origin of population II 7Li, in both big bang nucleosynthesis and galactic cosmic-ray nucleosynthesis is discussed. It is argued that with additional 6Li data, stringent limits on the degree of 7Li depletion can be obtained. 7Li depletion is also constrained by the concordance of big bang predictions with observational determinations of light element abundances. Stringent limits can al...
